If You Can’t Talk About Sex, Don’t Get Married

It might sound dramatic, but we mean it: if you can’t have an honest conversation about sex with the person you’re about to marry, you’re not ready to get married.

Not because you’re immature. Not because you’re doing anything wrong. But because marriage has a way of exposing every conversation you avoided while dating - and sex is one of the biggest ones.

We sit with couples who love each other deeply, who are committed and kind and excited for their future. But when we ask about sex - expectations, fears, desire, boundaries - the room gets awkward. There’s nervous laughter. Vague answers. Or the classic: “We’ll figure it out.”

Respectfully? No, you won’t.

Marriage doesn’t magically remove shame, insecurity, trauma, religious messaging, or fear of rejection. If those things exist now, they’re coming with you. Love does not override your nervous system.

Sex is rarely just about sex. It’s about vulnerability. It’s about how you handle rejection, how you ask for what you want, how safe you feel in your own body, and whether you can stay present when something feels exposed. Avoiding the conversation usually means you’re avoiding the vulnerability underneath it.

You don’t need a perfect sex talk before marriage. You don’t need matching libidos or unshakeable confidence. But you do need the ability to say things like, “I’m embarrassed,” “I don’t know what I like,” “I’m afraid I won’t be enough,” or “I want more than we’re having.” And you need a spouse who can stay in that conversation without shutting down or getting defensive.

The issue isn’t difference. It’s avoidance. If you can’t talk about sex now, that pattern won’t stay in the bedroom. It will show up in how you talk about money, parenting, loneliness, and conflict – all of it.

Before you say “I do,” sit down and ask real questions. What did your family teach you about sex? What fears are you carrying? What does rejection feel like? What does initiation look like? What makes you feel safe?

You don’t need polished answers. You need honesty. Real, sometimes awkward, slightly sweaty honesty.

Marriage isn’t about protecting romance by avoiding hard topics. It’s about building enough emotional safety that hard topics strengthen the relationship instead of quietly eroding it.

If you can’t talk about sex, don’t spiral. But don’t ignore it either. Start practicing the conversation now. It’s one of the most important foundations you’ll ever lay.
